Unsafe intersections

While I get many calls from constituents from all around Cottonwood Heights related to speeding and running of red lights through intersections around our city, we also know that Holladay resident Lily Lee was struck and killed in Cottonwood Heights’ crosswalk, pre-dawn darkness, December 8th at the intersection of 6200 South & Wasatch Blvd/SR 190.

Digging in to find out the particulars surrounding her death, I found out that all four of the high-pole lights above the intersection had been out for months prior to the tragedy and were still not being repaired.. The UDOT Region 2 traffic engineer with whom I met admitted that the high speeds travelled along SR 190 and lack of adequate lighting may have contributed to the danger. By contacting CHPD and UDOT several times, ultimately found that Utah statute indicates that lighting maintanence lies with the municipality.

In late February, CH Public Works repaired the lighting at the 6200 South & Wasatch Blvd/SR 190 intersection.

One positive note:  UDOT applied within the 2025 Legislative session for future funding to monitor and maintain intersection lighting maintenance on all of their State Routes.
